About

Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest and oldest national park, a wilderness of dense jungle strung with dozens of "villus" — natural rain-fed lakes that give the park its name and its rhythm. Leopards, sloth bears, and elephants move between the water and the forest, and game drives here feel like genuine exploration: long sandy tracks under a high canopy, opening suddenly onto a lake shore where anything might be drinking.

Because Wilpattu sees a fraction of Yala's traffic, sightings are quieter and wilder — often yours alone. It pairs naturally with Anuradhapura, forty minutes away, making a perfect culture-and-wildlife day in the island's northwest.

We've walked the trails, paid the fees, and rated every guide. Below: how to get there, when to skip it, and what nearby places pair well — the kind of advice a local friend would give.
