Weligama
Weligama means "sandy village," and its huge, gently shelving bay is the best place in Sri Lanka to learn to surf — soft beach-break waves rolling in all day, water warm enough to live in, and a line of surf schools and board rentals along the sand. Progress comes fast here, and more experienced surfers have reef points at either end of the bay.
Beyond the waves, Weligama keeps its fishing-town soul: outrigger boats land the morning catch, stilt fishermen perch offshore at Koggala nearby, and the taprobane of guidebook legend — a tiny private island with a colonial villa — floats just off the beach. Mirissa's whales and Galle Fort are both twenty minutes away.
We've walked the trails, paid the fees, and rated every guide. Below: how to get there, when to skip it, and what nearby places pair well — the kind of advice a local friend would give.
