About

Unawatuna is the south coast's most famous crescent — a jungle-backed bay of golden sand and calm, swimmable water just ten minutes from Galle Fort. Protected by its reef, the sea here stays gentle most of the year, which made the beach a traveller favourite decades ago and keeps families coming back today. Above the western headland, the Japanese Peace Pagoda offers the classic sunset view along the coast.

Behind the beach, a lively lane of cafés, dive schools, and guesthouses winds toward hidden Jungle Beach and the rock temples of Rumassala. Snorkel the reef in the morning, take lunch barefoot at a beach restaurant, and wander into Galle for the evening ramparts walk.

We've walked the trails, paid the fees, and rated every guide. Below: how to get there, when to skip it, and what nearby places pair well — the kind of advice a local friend would give.
