Tangalle
Tangalle is where the south coast empties out: kilometre after kilometre of wide, wild beach broken into rocky coves, with barely a beach bar in sight. This is the coast for readers, walkers, and anyone who measures a good day by how few people crossed it. The surf is powerful on the open stretches, while lagoon-sheltered corners like Silent Beach offer calmer water.
The area rewards slow exploration — Mulkirigala's clifftop rock temple half an hour inland, mangrove lagoons alive with kingfishers, and night walks where sea turtles haul out to nest at Rekawa, one of the island's most important nesting beaches. Yala and Udawalawe are both within striking distance for a safari day.
We've walked the trails, paid the fees, and rated every guide. Below: how to get there, when to skip it, and what nearby places pair well — the kind of advice a local friend would give.
