Minneriya National Park

Each dry season, as water vanishes elsewhere, elephants converge on the receding shores of the ancient Minneriya reservoir — a third-century tank still doing its job seventeen centuries on. At its peak, "The Gathering" brings three hundred or more elephants onto the grassy lakebed at once: the largest regular meeting of Asian elephants in the world, and one of the great wildlife spectacles anywhere.

Afternoon drives are best, when herds stream out of the treeline to graze and bathe in the golden light. Minneriya sits minutes from Sigiriya and Dambulla, so the Gathering slots effortlessly into any Cultural Triangle itinerary — a safari between the citadels.
