About

The Knuckles Range — named for its resemblance to a closed fist — is the wildest corner of the hill country, a UNESCO-listed massif of thirty-four peaks, cloud forest, and remote villages where life has changed little in a century. This is Sri Lanka's best trekking: paths over grassy ridgelines, through bamboo groves and pygmy forest, past waterfalls and terraced paddies, with barely another traveller in sight.

Routes run from half-day walks to multi-day traverses with village homestays, and a local guide is both required and genuinely worth it — the weather shifts fast, and the stories are half the experience. Base yourself in Kandy or a village on the range's edge and give it at least a full day.

We've walked the trails, paid the fees, and rated every guide. Below: how to get there, when to skip it, and what nearby places pair well — the kind of advice a local friend would give.
