About

Anuradhapura was the island's first great capital, a city that flourished for thirteen hundred years and remains one of Buddhism's most sacred places. Its skyline is still defined by colossal white and brick stupas — Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanarama, Abhayagiri — some of which were among the tallest structures of the ancient world. At the heart of it grows the Sri Maha Bodhi, a tree raised from a cutting of the very bodhi under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, tended continuously for over 2,200 years.

The sacred city rewards unhurried exploration: cycle between the monasteries, watch white-clad pilgrims circle the stupas at dusk, and let the scale of the place sink in. It is living heritage, not a museum.

We've walked the trails, paid the fees, and rated every guide. Below: how to get there, when to skip it, and what nearby places pair well — the kind of advice a local friend would give.
